Chinese Nuclear Reactor Connects to the Grid

Unit 3 of ChinaGeneral Nuclear's (CGN's) Yangjiang plant in Guangdong province has been connected to theelectricity grid. The reactor is expected to enter commercial operation by theend of the year, says World Nuclear News.

 

Construction of the unit began in November 2010. The loading offuel assemblies into the reactor's core was completed on September 11 and theunit achieved first criticality on October 11.

 

Six units are planned for the Yangjiang site by CGN. The firsttwo units are 1,021 MWe (net) CPR-1000 pressurized water reactors. Units 3 and4 are 1,089 MWe CPR-1000+ units. Units 5 and 6 are 1,080 MWe ACPR-1000s. Unit 1entered commercial operation in March and Unit 2 began commercial operation inJune. Unit 4 has been under construction since 2012 and is scheduled to startup in 2017.

 

First concrete for Unit 5 was poured in September 2013, whilefirst pour for unit 6 took place three months later.

 

All six reactors should be in operation by 2019, with acombined generating capacity of around 6,100 MWe.
